How to Claim Your Winnings: Your Questions Answered
When you play the lottery you never know when your lucky day will come. That said, you are probably already wondering how you will receive your prize money if you are lucky enough to win. That’s why we’re here – to answer your questions.
We’ve listed several of the most frequently asked questions about claiming winnings at theLotter. Our answers relate to our standard procedures, but each claim is handled on a case by case basis, according to the specific circumstances of the winner and the prize. We hope our answers will clarify the process.
What is the procedure for getting my prize?
First of all, congratulations on winning! We will notify you that you won a prize with an automatic email and, if you signed up to receive them—an SMS winning alert. You will be able to view the draw details and your win in the Wins section of your account. We will transfer secondary winnings (prizes other than a jackpot) to your account shortly after receipt of the prize from the official lottery operator. If you win a larger prize, we may arrange to transfer the money to you with a bank transfer. If you are lucky enough to win a lottery jackpot, you may be required to travel and collect your prize in person. Our Customer Service Team will coordinate the win collection process with you.
How long will it take until I get my prize?
This depends on the specific lottery, and the country where that lottery stages its draws, because every lottery has different rules. We will transfer secondary winnings (prizes other than a jackpot) to your account shortly after receipt of the prize from the official lottery operator. When you win a larger prize, we may arrange to wire you the money with a bank transfer, while you may need to travel and collect a jackpot prize in person. Quite obviously we want you to get your prize as quickly as possible.
When can I withdraw my winnings?
Once your account has been credited with your winnings, you can use your prize money to make new purchases on the site or withdraw it. If you win a larger prize, we may arrange to wire you the money with a bank transfer. In the case of a jackpot win, you may be required to collect it on your own.
Can I just have my winnings wired to my bank account?
We cannot wire smaller secondary winnings (prizes other than a jackpot) to your bank account but as soon as you receive the prize money, you can use it to make new purchases on the site or choose to withdraw it. In the case of bigger prizes, we may be able to wire them to you by bank transfer. If you win a very large prize, such as a jackpot, you may need to collect it yourself.
Do I need a visa to travel and collect my prize?
The need for a visa would depend on what country you are from and what country you're travelling to. It is important to note that theLotter does not assist in visa applications. We do everything we can to assist you in collecting your prize, but you will need to arrange for the visa by yourself.
Is it possible to claim an American lottery prize if don’t have a visa?
Arranging a visa for travel to the United States, if required, is your responsibility and unfortunately, we can’t help you with that. If you don’t have a visa it is possible that you could arrange for someone, such as a trusted relative or a local lawyer, to collect the prize for you. In certain cases, our representative could collect the lottery prize on your behalf. The exact arrangement for collecting your prize will be arranged between you and our Customer Service Team. We will assist you in finding the most convenient solution for claiming your win.
What if I can’t travel to collect my prize?
If you are unable to travel it may be possible for you to arrange for someone, such as a trusted relative or a local lawyer, to collect the prize for you. In certain cases, our representative could collect the lottery prize on your behalf. The exact arrangement for collecting your prize will be arranged between you and our Customer Service Team. We will assist you in finding the most convenient solution for claiming your win.
What if a syndicate I’m in wins the jackpot? How will I get my prize then?
Quite obviously it would not be practical for all members of a winning syndicate to travel and collect a jackpot prize as a group. If a syndicate wins the jackpot, it is likely that a trust fund would be established, and a lawyer appointed to represent the trust fund in claiming the win. After the win is claimed the money would be distributed between the syndicate members, proportionate to the number of shares each one has in the syndicate.
How can I be certain that my prize will not be taken by one of your employees?
We are a reputable company in business since 2002. Making sure our customers get the best possible service and always get their wins is our highest priority and what our whole brand is built on. This is not something we would ever want to risk.
We have safety measures in place for protecting the tickets and wins of the customers. We do thorough background checks on everyone we hire, and we have legally binding contracts with all our employees. Our system checks tickets automatically to determine which are winning tickets and our local offices process win claims. We take utmost care at all stages of this process because we are aware that we are acting on behalf of our customers—the rightful ticket owners entitled to the prize money.
In all our years of business there has never been a case when a winner didn't get his/her win. Our entire business depends on the fact that our customers will receive their prizes when they win. We believe firmly in our procedures and the process of the ticket handling.
In what currency will I receive my prize?
When we deposit smaller secondary winnings (prizes other than a jackpot) into your account, they are converted to the currency of your account based on the exchange rate at the time. In cases when we are wiring you your prize, we are only able to transfer funds in USD, GBP and EUR. Your bank will convert these funds to a local currency at a rate and fee that it sets. You must check this with your own local bank. If you win a lottery jackpot and go there personally to claim your win, you will need to make your own arrangements with the official lottery operator as to how to transfer the money.
How much in taxes will I have to pay on my winnings?
Each lottery has its own rules and regulations and while some lotteries award their prizes tax free, the winnings in other lotteries are subject to taxes according to the rules and regulations of the country where the lottery’s draw took place. In the case of many lotteries, taxes are withheld at source. This means that the prize you will receive if you win could be less than the advertised prize amount. No matter what prize you receive, you may be subject to local taxation, based on your country of residence. Always check with a tax professional if you come into a large sum of money.
What percentage of my winnings do I have to pay theLotter?
When you win a lottery prize, the entire amount is yours! theLotter does not take a commission or fee on your winnings. Please note, however, that winnings in some lotteries are taxable and taxes may be deducted at source before you receive your prize. If you transfer your winnings to your bank, you may be required to pay a bank transfer fee.
We hope we answered your questions about claiming your lottery winnings. If you have a question that isn’t included here, you may find the answer in our FAQ section. Good luck playing the lottery online!
